Syrah is becoming one of the world’s most popular red varietals, and represents over 40% of the acreage planted in Australia, where it is called Shiraz. More than most grapes, the wine’s character is influenced by the area and climate where the grapes are grown, producing very different wines in France, Australia and Washington. Syrah from France tends to exhibit strong tannins, spice and black pepper. In Australia, bold fruit, blackberries and bramble are more prominent. In Washington, the grape produces good fruitiness combined with the pepper and spice that Syrah is known for.

Washington is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the best places in the world to grow Syrah, and we will taste many fine examples. Wineries represented will include Apex Cellars, Willis Hall, Kestrel, Note Bene, Glen Fiona, Zerba and many others. On the international front, there will be a table of Australian Shiraz and Rhône-style white wines, including selections from D’Arenberg, Yalumba, McLaren Vale and Wishing Tree among others. A French table will feature Syrahs and Rhône whites from such producers as Guigal Cotes du Rhône, La Vieille Ferme, and Les Deux Rives.

Rounding out this tasting extravaganza will be a table of Northwest Rhône-style wines, both reds and whites, including blends from Brian Carter, Willow Crest, Alexandria Nicole and others. The tasting will be in the popular ‘walk-around’ format with wine tables grouped by region. Each attendee will receive twelve tickets to taste the wines of his/her choice. We have limited quantities of some of these wines, so try your personal favorites first.

Food by Cater Seattle

Chocolates by George!
Many of us enjoy a bit of chocolate with our red wine, but did you know that women can reduce their risk of heart disease by 54% by drinking red wine and eating dark chocolate?!? So, in the interest of good health – that’s why we do this, isn’t it? – we will have wonderful Chocolates by George! Each attendee will receive two different truffles as part of his/her admission, and will have the opportunity to buy more from the Whidbey Island company Chocolates by George! In the spring of 2006, owner George Brunjes began selling fabulous confections made from the finest ingredients, including Callebaut chocolate, organic cream and European butter. His velvety truffles are available in a wide range of flavors, from simple to exotic. He also makes nut clusters and five kinds of caramel. Molded chocolates are available for selected holidays. For more information, call George at (360) 730-1138.

Get your tickets early on PayPal as this event could easily sell out. However, at least 30 tickets will be available for last-minute purchase at the door.
